SDCC Exclusive: Raúl Castillo Opens Up About The New Season Of ‘The Walking Dead: Dead City’
The Walking Dead: Dead City took over San Diego Comic Con this past weekend to promote their new season. Star of the series, Raúl Castillo, chatted with BB, and fellow press, about the new season and future hopes for the franchise.
From your character’s perspective, which character from the original The Walking Dead series would you like to see return:
“I think we need Daryl’s muscles, don’t we? We need muscle. I think Daryl, perhaps. Kind of a no-brainer.”
What was most exciting about joining The Walking Dead: Dead City”
“I mean, the cast. I will say Lauren [Cohan] and Jeffrey [Dean Morgan] were such incredible hosts, and they really set the tone. You never know as an actor when you’re walking into an environment that’s been pre-established, and you don’t know what you’re walking into all the time. To walk into an environment where we were put in a position where we can deliver our best work and always feel empowered with these incredible scripts and these characters that are so layered—you wish as an actor to have opportunities like that.”
As a Latino, roles are limited. And certainly the humanity in the characters is sometimes limited. To find these characters, both Renata and Luis, so beautifully drawn and rendered by the writers, we had so much to work with. It was an absolute joy to be on set.”
If a zombie apocalypse happened in real life, would you rather be stuck in the city or upstate New York”
“I live in Brooklyn, and an exit strategy is something I think about. Already traveling is terrible, getting out of my neighborhood. I can’t even imagine under the circumstances. I’ll be upstate.”
Would you like to see The Walking Dead universe expand into other locations? If so, where would you like to see it go:
“Selfishly, Mexico City.”
What was your experience like joining a long-running series with an established cast and universe:
“Lauren and Jeffrey were such incredible hosts, and they really set the tone. You never know as an actor when you’re walking into an environment that’s already been established, but to walk into one where you’re empowered and supported with incredible scripts and layered characters is everything you hope for as an actor. Renata [Aimee Garcia] and Luis are beautifully drawn characters, and we had so much to work with. It was an absolute joy to be on set.”
