Review: Season Three of ‘My Adventures with Superman’ Delivers In The Best Way

DC Studios’ My Adventures with Superman is set to kick off season three this coming weekend on Adult Swim. Much like its previous seasons, the third season is filled with fun shenanigans and heartfelt moments.

Season three follows some big moments across the Superman lore, that we aren’t going to spoil for our fans. However, the running theme of the season can be narrowed down to two words, the future. After the events of season two, where no one knew whether they would make it out alive, our favorite characters have begun to think about their futures and struggle with where they see themselves in the years to come. For Kara and Jimmy, is it a will they or won’t they on whether they will get together while Kara continues to discover her identity. Clark, on the other hand, sees a farm on the outskirts of town with Lois by his side, while Lois will do anything to not think about the future. That is until, a superhero from the future, Superboy, comes to throw them all for a loop and truly brings the future to the present.

In between these every day struggles, the group has to do with a scheming Lex Luther, who is determined to make sure that the future does not include the likes of Superman and Supergirl. In doing so, he enlists human pilot Hank Henshaw, who fans will remember as nearly finding his end in season two, to help the world try and see that they don’t need the Kryptonians to save the day.

The beauty of this series is its ability to tell mature stories while also keeping the show’s light-hearted feel. Season three sticks with these vibes. With so much focus on the the future, each episode could have been a slog fest of “woe is me” and narrative repetition, but showrunners and head writers, Jake Wyatt, Brendan Clogher, and Josie Campbell do a wonderful job of navigating the story in a way where fans are not left without a smile on their face. Kara is once again a bright spot of the season, along with the introduction of Superboy. Lois’ storyline can be a bit much as time, but when Lois gets to doing what Lois does, investigating a real story, fans are reminded on why she is one of the best female characters in the DC Universe. Finally, Clark’s outlook on the injustices of the universe is a gorgeous view at how those with the power to change the world for good, can. Even in moments where most would break, go against their morals, and make the easier decision, Clark continues to show that the best of the best know how to make the tough decisions without sacrificing their morals.

It’s still a bit of questioning choice as to why Adult Swim airs this series during the midnight timeslot because it continues to deliver season after season. Though, all is not lost, as the series does stream on HBO Max, so make sure to check it out. It’s ambitious, heartfelt, and still one of the best animated iterations of the comic superhero to date.
