EXCLUSIVE: Stephen Curry Talks Producing & Voicing a Giraffe in ‘GOAT’

Stephen Curry is leaving the basketball court to lend his voice to the giraffe, Lenny Williamson, in Sony Pictures Animations new movie, GOAT. Set to be released today, February 13, we got the chance to hear from the basketball star.

During the chat, Curry talked what it was like to voice Lenny, facing adversity, what he hopes audiences get from the movie, and so much more. Check out what he had to say below.

On why he was attracted to this movie: “The authenticity stood out. I see parts of myself in Will — that underdog mentality. It’s not just a sports story; it’s something the whole family can enjoy.”

On what parts of the movie’s lead, Will, reflect with him: “Dreaming big. Being told what you can’t do. I was a late bloomer. I had to earn everything. Comparing yourself to others can distract you. Run your own race. Be ready when your moment comes.”

On voicing Lenny: “It was so much fun. Lenny’s on an emotional roller coaster — worried about basketball, worried about music — but he has pure joy. I relate to that. It was my first voice acting role, and once I found Lenny’s authentic voice, it became unforgettable.”

On the basketball life moments featured in the movie: “Will’s first time on a plane reminded me of my rookie year — trying not to get in the way but also act like you belong. That dynamic is real.”

On facing adversity: “My junior year at a big tournament, I had the worst statistical game of the summer. I thought I lost my opportunity. But my coach saw how I carried myself through mistakes. It taught me success isn’t just results — it’s spirit and process.”

On what he hopes audiences get from the movie: “I hope this isn’t just about basketball. I hope families see that they’re good enough. Whatever makes you unique is sufficient. Put energy toward that.”
