EXCLUSIVE: Patton Oswalt Discusses Dennis & His New Film, ‘GOAT’

Sony Pictures Animation released their new animation creation, GOAT, today, February 13. To celebrate, BeautifulBallad got to hear from one of the stars of the flick, Patton Oswalt, who voices Dennis in the film.

During the chat, Oswalt talked playing his character, Dennis, roasting the team, facing adversity, and so much more. Check out what he said below.

On playing Dennis: “He’s an authority figure with zero authority. He lost a battle with Jett on day one. During the movie, he has to remind himself he’s the coach and help players get out of their own way.”

On roasting the team: “Tyree [Dillihay] said, ‘You’re roasting them to greatness.’ That was perfect direction. Dennis attacks but builds them up.”

On Will and Jett’s confidence dynamic: “Will lacks confidence but builds it. Jett looks confident but hides doubt. They meet in the middle.”

On seeing his character design: “When I saw Dennis, I immediately knew him — carrying the weight of the universe but trying to stay upbeat.”

On facing adversity: “In 1994, I bombed on stage for five months. A friend told me to talk about bombing while bombing. I did, and it worked. Use the bad stuff — you don’t have a choice.”

On his final thoughts on the film before it hits theaters: “There’s no right way to make it. Dreamers have to wake up and face reality. And… fancy toilets.”
