Could Disney Be Thinking of Releasing “Mulan” to VOD?

It looks like Disney may be contemplating whether or not to release Mulan to theaters. With its release date right around the corner (July 24), Disney execs are trying to decide if they will release the movie in theaters or send it straight to VOD.

Wall Street analyst Michael Nathanson revealed in a conversation with his colleagues Craig Moffett and Nick Del Deo that “I don’t think it’s a given that Mulan‘s going to be released as we think.” There are many pieces that need to be put into place between now and July 24 to ensure the movie can be released in theaters.

One of the most important pieces of this puzzle is whether enough theaters will be opened. Many smaller theater markets are intending to open up by the end of June, but the bigger theater markets may not open until the Fall.

At this point, I don’t really care how they release it, I just want them to release it. I would rather them release it to VOD or Disney+ then keep pushing the date back. But alas, I do not get to make the final decision.

What are your thoughts on the possible move?
