ABC Finds A Fresh New Comedy In The Mayor

ABC premieres its new comedy The Mayor tonight, October 3, and viewers are in for a treat. The new series from Jeremy Bronson and Daveed Diggs, is a fresh idea with a lot of potential.

In the premiere, young rapper Courtney Rose, runs for Mayor of his small town in hopes of drawing attention to his rap career. However, at local debate with his fellow nominees, Rose manages to unintentionally sway the public to elect him. He soon finds out being Mayor and trying to balance his rising rap career isn’t as easy as he thought.

As far as premieres go, The Mayor‘s was fun and entertaining. The timing on certain scenes in the episode seemed almost too rushed and conversations that could have been more fully developed were skimmed but those low points are to be expected in a pilot. As the show progresses, these little kinks should manage to straighten out.

The strong cast is what propels this show forward. Brandon Micheal Hall leads the series as the charismatic Courtney Rose. Hall’s comedic timing, quick delivery, and spot on non-verbals play out wonderfully throughout the episode.

Former Glee star, Lea Michele takes on the role of campaign manager Valentina Barella. This role isn’t much of a stretch for her, basically a grown up version of Rachel. However, Michele has a natural talent for comedies and this role allows her to show off her best qualities.

Community’s Yvette Nicole Brown is as brilliant as one would expect as Courtney’s mom, Dina. The chemistry between Hall and Brown is off the charts. Brown brings her A-game and it will be exciting to see this character grow as the season progresses.

ABC’s newest comedy The Mayor is a refreshing addition to a network filled with intense dramas and feel good family comedies.
