ADVANCE PREVIEW: Freeform May Have Found its Next Hit in Famous in Love

Sexy and addicting are just some of the ways to describe Freeform’s newest series, Famous in Love. Based on the book series by Rebecca Serle, the series follows Paige Townsen as her life goes from normal college girl to Hollywood starlet after she lands the lead role in the highly anticipated new movie, Locked.

We at BeautifulBallad, have had the privilege of watching the entire first season and the first thing to note about this show is that it has an older feel to it than some of Freeform’s other shows. Ever since Freeform changed it name from ABC Family to Freeform a couple of years ago, they have been looking for a show that will move them out of the young kids/young teenager’s demographic and into the college age/young adult demographic and they have found it with Famous in Love. The scenes are more mature, as are the storylines, which allows the show to delve into some pretty interesting topics.

Another thing to note about this show, is that it gives fans behind the scenes look at Hollywood. Sure, some of the storylines are a little far-fetched, but the sets they shoot on are the actual sets they use to film the show on the Warner Bros. lot. The politics and the drama that unfold on the show are things that could or have taken place in real life. It really gives fans a nice inside look at the inner workings of Hollywood.

Bella Thorne leads the show as Paige and does a great job bringing to life this optimistic, yet naïve character. Georgie Flores, Charlie DePew, Carter Jenkins, Keith Powers, Pepi Sonuga, and Niki Koss round out the rest of the cast and each star brings something different to each of their characters that will have fans loving and hating them at some point this season. The writers have also done a nice job balancing all of the show’s characters, so at no point do fans feel as though a storyline or character will just be dropped. Each one is connected in some shape or form. This especially can be said for Pepi’s character, Tangey, who doesn’t really appear in the first episode, but makes a huge impact on the show later on in the season.

Fans looking for a new show to fill the void that Pretty Little Liars will leave, once it ends later this year, will find that void filled with this show. Famous in Love is created by I. Marlene King, so it has some similarities to PLL, but at the same time it is completely different. If the first episode doesn’t leave you wanting more, and my guess is it will, the next few episodes will, so make sure to tune in tonight, April 18, at 9pm to catch the premiere. And, for those who can’t wait a week for the next episode, the entire first season will be available for streaming online after the premiere.
