REVIEW: Beyond Is A Step In The Right Direction For Freeform

Freeform’s newest series, Beyond, takes the college-geared channel in new directions. For years, ABC Family, now Freeform, has only dipped a toe into the world of Sci-Fi, but with Beyond they have dived in, head-first. This supernatural drama tells the story of a young man, Holden (Burkley Duffield), who discovers he has extraordinary powers after waking from a coma. Holden soon discovers that his life is in danger and he can’t trust those around him when a mysterious woman arrives and tells Holden he wasn’t just in a coma.

The first episode fills in the back story of Holden pre-coma and what his life is like now, post-coma. Minor flashbacks and decent development of the core characters get the new series off to an OK start. It is a bit predictable and stereotypical at times. One might get the sense this story has been done before a million times, but as the episode progresses there are some nice surprise twists that should have the audience tuning in for the next episode.

Beyond has the potential to be a stand out show for the network. If the show continues to grow its characters and keep the story fresh and entertaining, it will be back for a second season. It also helps that this will be the network’s first show in quite some time with a male lead. It is also the first time the network has unveiled the entire season all at once, which may help the show as you will want to watch the second episode ASAP.
