BeautifulBallad Reviews FOX’s New Show, Gotham

One of the most hyped pilots of this Fall TV season is the gritty crime drama Gotham. Gotham follows Jim Gordon, a rookie detective in the Gotham City Police Department, who is tasked to solve the murders of Thomas and Martha Wayne. Any of these names ring a bell? They should. All of these people are characters featured in the Batman comics.

Premiering on FOX tonight, September 22, this new drama sets up the foundation for the characters that will be featured throughout the series. Many of the characters introduced in tonight’s episode are ones that will one day become the villains and heroes we love in the Batman comics.

In the pilot we meet Oswald Cobblepot, played by Robin Lord Taylor, who one day will become one of Batman’s biggest foes, The Penguin. Robin’s portrayal of Oswald was terrifying and eccentric showing brief glimpses as to why he is nicknamed “Penguin”.

Another standout was Donal Logue as Detective Harvey Bullock. His characterization of lazy and corrupt Harvey was exactly as I envisioned him in the comics and cartoon series.

Like with all pilots, this one had a couple of missteps, but it definitely lives up to its hype. This will be one show I will be tuning into each week this Fall season. And if you are a fan of Batman (or even if you are not) you will enjoy show creator Bruno Heller’s take on the city of Gotham and the world of Batman in this new series.
